Purpose of the course unit

This course is useful for students who want to deepen their understanding of the processes involved in conflicts and their knowledge of how to intervene and manage conflicts constructively. Through examination of sources of conflict, attitudes and beliefs, conflict styles, participants will gain an overview of conflict dynamic and conflict management strategies. Designed both to improve understanding of theory and to build conflict resolution skills, this course offers specific, practical guidance and models that can be used to understand, analyze, assess, and effectively resolve different conflicts.

Quality of case analysis. Independent preparation of a case analysis that will require student to analyze a conflict featured in a case applying learned frameworks. Analysis should include statement of chosen problem, identification of critical issues, main parties and other stakeholders, discussion of issues contributing to the conflict and recommendations, addressed to the appropriate character from the case. Quality of applying situation appropriate conflict management styles, strategies, tactics.

Independent research paper on assigned conflict or response paper addressing assigned question (8 pages). Quality of conflict assessment according different criteria and ability to compare and evaluate different models of conflict management. Criteria: Content (quality of the information and ideas; appropriate sources and details used to support them). Structure (logical order or sequence of the writing). Analysis (evidence of critical thinking and insight). Information literacy (locating,evaluating, and using effectively the needed information as appropriate to assignment). Source integrity (appropriate acknowledgment of sources used in research).
