Purpose of the course unit

The purpose of the course unit of Business English (CEF levels B2-C1) is o to refresh students’ communication skills in business world covering the most important areas of contemporary business as well as developing essential business skills o to expand students‘ vocabulary and develop skills of correct use of the language in oral and written form; o to develop students’skills in critical evaluation of different texts o to develop generic competences (to work with various information sources, to organise work activity autonomously, to work in a team, etc).

The following aspects are assessed: The students are able to : 1. identify and define the terms by reading professional literature; 2. demonstrate the perception of vocabulary by listening authentic materials and using the professional terms in oral and written form; 3. interpret the cultural information of the study subject; 4. choose the appropriate research strategy and methods needed in making a presentation, a case or problem study; 5. performs self-checks tests.

The end of the semester

The test consists of an integrated reading and writing test (summary writing) to check students’ knowledge of terms in use and a listening test to check listening comprehension skills. Test results are assessed using a ten-point scale: 100-95 % correct points – 10; 94-85 % – 9; 84-75% – 8; 74-65% – 7; 64-55 % – 6; 54-45 % – 5; 44-35%– 4; 34-25 % – 3; 24-15 % – 2; 14-5 % – 1; 4-0 % – 0.

Examination

During the session.

The examination consists of two parts: knowledge and skills test which checks students’ knowledge of terms in use and speaking. Test results are assessed using a ten-point scale: 100-95 % correct points – 10; 94-85 % – 9; 84-75% – 8; 74-65% – 7; 64-55 % – 6; 54-45 % – 5; 44-35%– 4; 34-25 % – 3; 24-15 % – 2; 14-5 % – 1; 4-0 % – 0. During the oral examination a student talks to a teacher on study subject covered topics – answers teacher’s questions, expresses the opinion on problem based issues, etc. The criteria being assessed: 1) ability to participate in the conversation on LSP topics; 2) ability to use LSP terms properly; 3) ability to use lexical and grammar structures appropriately; 4) ability to speak fluently and correctly.
